MPs have voted to request an extension to Article 50 by a large majority, with Parliament taking control of Britain’s divorce from the bloc.

Some 413 MPs voted for the extension in the main motion while 202 voted against it. This means it is now the Government's policy to delay Britain's exit date from the EU.

Those voting against the motion included 188 Conservative MPs, many of whom are known as being from the more heavily eurosceptic wing of the party, although these were outnumbered by a majority of 211. This means that Theresa May saw more of her party vote against her than for her.

Alun Cairns, Welsh Secretary,  voted in both lobbies in an effective abstention.
